Title

Impact of group self-determination/self-advocacy training on adolescents with high functioning autism/Aperger’s syndrome

Committee

Abstract

Over the past two decades, educators have recognized the importance of teaching students with disabilities to be self-determined, socially and emotionally competent individuals who can advocate for themselves. Unfortunately, the majority of students who require explicit instruction in these areas do not receive it. These three areas of instruction are especially important for students with high functioning autism/Asperger’s syndrome (HFA/AS) because exposure to negative encounters with peers and teachers and lack of guidance during the transition from childhood to adulthood has been linked to many long-term risks. The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a self-determination/self-advocacy (SD/SA) intervention with six adolescents with HFA/AS, using a pretest multiple-posttest design. The intervention consisted of two components – a training phase and a practice phase. During the training phase, participants were taught self-determination, self-advocacy, and social skills that would prepare them for the practice phase of the intervention. During the practice phase, the group participated in six public panel discussions in which they shared their experiences of what it is like to have HFA/AS. Six dependent variables were measured: 1) self-determination skills; 2) self-concept/self-esteem; 3) friendship development and closeness; 4) participant satisfaction; 5) parent satisfaction; and 6) audience satisfaction. The results offer preliminary evidence of an association between the SD/SA group intervention and positive outcomes in all six areas. The results are discussed with reference to contextual information and previous research. Social validity, collateral benefits, limitations, and future directions are also discussed.

Vancouver Green Drinks Invitation

November 6, 2009 at 11:52 am (Environmental Education Caucus)

Date:  Wednesday, November 18th | 5:45pm

Location: Steamworks Pub | 375 Water Street | Vancouver

What is Green Drinks?

This casual monthly gathering is for anyone interested in sustainability issues.  The drinks aren’t green, but the people are!  Meetings are held across Canada and around the world.  In Vancouver, the meetings are usually the 3rd Wednesday of each month.  Exceptions are July and December.

There’s no agenda or other formality.  It’s just a chance to meet regularly to chat, debate, socialize and connect with others in Vancouver who are passionate about environmental issues and  all things ‘green’.

Steamworks is next to Waterfront Station on the edge of Gastown.  We’re usually in the back room but changing space availability means we sometimes get shifted around – if you can’t find us just ask the pub staff.

2009/2010 CREATE Seminar Series

November 6, 2009 at 9:52 am (CREATE)

Susan Grossman, Associate Director UBC-Community Learning Initiative
Community Service Learning: A High Impact Practice
Tuesday November 17th, 2009 – 12:30 – 2:00pm in Scarfe 310.

Community service learning (CSL) and community based research (CBR) are two pedagogical practices that encourage students to test their course-based competencies outside the classroom and in the realm of community. Each brings students into learning environments where qualities and skills such as a tolerance for ambiguity, a capacity for critical thinking and creative problem solving, and the ability to work across cultures are fostered. These approaches to learning are congruent with National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) research that delineates CSL as one of the high-impact practices that improve the quality of the student learning experience.

A light lunch will be provided. Please RSVP Hannah (hannah.hashimoto@ubc.ca) by NOON November 12th, 2009
