In Fall 2010, MERM arranged for doctoral student and ECPS Research Methodology GAA Yan Liu to offer a free two-part introductory quantitative software workshop on SPSS.

Now, we are planning a free qualitative software workshop on Atlas.ti to be offered in February or March, 2011 by Sharalyn Jordan, who is currently teaching EPSE 595. This workshop is open to faculty and students. We are considering 4 dates/time slots for this 4-hr workshop. Here are the potential dates with their time slots:

Wed., Feb. 16, 2011: 1:00 to 5:00 pm (note: This is during the February Break.)
Thurs., Mar. 3, 2011: 4:30 to 8:30 pm
Fri., Mar. 4, 2011: 10:00 am to 2:30 pm (note: includes a 30-min. lunch break in the middle)
Thurs., Mar. 10, 2011: 12:30 to 4:30 pm

If you are interested in attending this workshop, please e-mail Yan at lyspa2004@hotmail.com by Monday, Jan. 31, 2011 to let her know any and all dates/time slots that you could possibly attend and if you already have a copy of Atlas.ti on a laptop that you can bring or not. This information will help us determine both interest and which date will work best. Only one tutorial can be scheduled. We will select the one date (sorry, the time slots are set) that accommodates the most people. An e-mail will be sent out to inform everyone of the selected date and time slot for the workshop and to confirm registration.

Here is a brief description of the workshop:

This workshop is designed for people who are unfamiliar with Atlas.ti but considering or planning to use it for a research project. The introduction provides a brief overview of issues and resources that will help participants make informed decisions about computer software support for their qualitative research projects. The focus of the workshop will be Atlas.ti skills development. Participants will learn basic skills for starting and maintaining a project on Atlas.ti knowledge workbench: 1) importing, opening, saving and transporting files, 2) coding text documents, creating code families, and memos, and 3) producing reports. More advanced skills, including constructing network views, will be demonstrated but not practiced. Participants will leave the workshop with a list of resources for developing their own skills. Please note that this workshop is not an introduction to qualitative text interpretation/data analysis. Prior familiarity with qualitative interpretation/analysis procedures is required to understand the use and benefits of software support. Workshop participants are encouraged to bring 2 text documents (can be short excerpts, must not be confidential excerpts) saved as word documents (.doc) or rich text files (.rtf) to practice coding.

Again, there are limited copies of Atlas.ti available in the CMS labs. Thus, faculty or students who already have Atlas.ti are encouraged to bring their laptops with the software to the workshop. Alternatively, you may choose to purchase Atlas.ti in advance and load it on a laptop for use during the workshop and later research. A quick check of the internet shows that Atlas.ti can be purchased by students for their own personal use for a very reasonable price ($99 U.S.). This is a bargain compared to the single-user educational price (e.g., faculty) of $598 U.S. (note that the non-educational price is $1800 U.S.) for Atlas.ti. All of this pricing is also better than NVivo which is $135 U.S. for 6 mos. only or $199 U.S. for 12 mos. only for students and $650 U.S. for a single-user educational (e.g., faculty) copy.

CHET Seminar: Dr. Daniel Vokey MORAL EDUCATION IN THE ACADEMY: “YOU CAN’T GET THERE FROM HERE”

Feb 1: 11:30 – 1:00 Ponderosa H, Room 123, UBC
ABSTRACT: Liberal democracies such as Canada and the United States are pluralistic in the sense that citizens represent a wide variety of beliefs and backgrounds and so have different moral, religious, philosophical, and political commitments. Public educational institutions are secular in morality is no longer understood according to the concepts of any one community or tradition, whether religious, philosophical, or otherwise—although the moral languages of some traditions are better represented in public life than others. It is therefore not surprising that strong disagreement persists over whether or not moral virtue should be cultivated in public schools, colleges, and universities –and, if so, what forms of moral virtue, how, and by whom. Even those who agree that some form of moral education is important– perhaps as a component of anti-racist, environmental, or democratic citizenship education –often disagree on what it should look like in theory and in practice. Daniel will weigh in on the debate over the feasibility and desirability of universities and colleges including some form of moral development among their explicit educational objectives for their students. He will discuss the obstacles and opportunities facing such initiatives with reference to the UBC strategic objectives of Aboriginal Engagement and Intercultural Understanding.

Dear Graduate students, Graduate secretaries and Graduate Advisors,

We in the Faculty of Graduate Studies are writing to solicit volunteers, suggestions, or nominations for graduate student or graduate program participants in this year’s President’s Blue and Gold Revue, to be held in late November or early December at the Chan Centre. This is a festive celebration providing a venue for the university’s special guests to be informed and inspired about UBC life. It showcases inventions, interviews, videos and music from UBC’s most outstanding students, faculty and staff.

We would love to showcase the exceptional individuals and work associated with the Faculty of Graduate Studies, and encourage you to consider whether you are or know someone or some group whose story would be of interest to the larger community. Past presentations have included:
• engineering students who participated in the national supermileage car competition;
• UBC performers who shared excerpts of theater, opera, and dance
• a team of engineers who have built a robot that could work on the moon
• a student who is making a difference in the lives of women living in Ghana
• a group of medical students who are running a health clinic in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside
The Blue and Gold Revue is linked with the publication of the UBC Annual Report, each highlighting exceptional individuals and activities at UBC. For stories better told on paper or audio-visually, the Annual Report may be a better vehicle; the Revue is an ideal opportunity for those students or program leaders who have stories that can be represented on stage.
Presentations for the Blue and Gold Revue can be a:
• 5-10 minute live presentation that may also include the showing of a short video clip of the project, program or research. The emphasis is on innovation, creativity and accessibility; or
• 5-10 minute artistic presentation (such as selections performed by the Opera Chorus in 2007)
Participants need not be polished performers or public speakers and we are looking for a wide spectrum of content and styles.
If you would like to nominate an individual or group, or feel that your own story may be of interest, please contact Lisa Pountney (lisa.pountney@ubc.ca), with the relevant names, affiliations, and a summary of the project. For any questions or further clarification, please contact either Susan Porter or Rhodri Windsor-Liscombe (contact information below). Please let us know by the end of July.
As it may not be possible to accommodate all submissions this year, any acts not used this year will be considered for subsequent years.

Inportant Information

The Department provides a number of opportunities for student employment, including graduate academic assistantships, graduate research assistantships, and graduate teaching assistantships. Employment in ECPS is meant to provide financial support, academic experience, and professional preparation for students. The Department is committed to equal access to and equity in providing employment opportunities to students; and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed or religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability, or other factors specified by law.

See also Policy #76 Student Service Appointments http://www.universitycounsel.ubc.ca/policies/policy76.pdf

Click here for Policy and Procedure Policy:

A student’s primary responsibility is to be academically successful, and employment should complement and not impede students’ academic work.

To qualify for employment in ECPS, a student must be full time.

A student employee serves only during the period for which s/he was hired. Employment during any period creates no expectancy of future employment. Student employees may be appointed for any portion of the academic year.

Students who are on leave may not be employed as a GAA, GRA or GTA.

Completing program requirements is a students’ highest priority and students may not be asked to work at times that conflict with those program requirements. Students may not work during their scheduled classes and may not be excused from class to work.

Student employees may be employed by more than one University department and in more than one capacity within ECPS, but a student’s total work hours may not exceed 20 hours per week and optimally should be no more than 12 hours per week. A student appointed as a GTA may be appointed to no more than one course per term or three courses across the academic year, and may not simultaneously hold other employment in the Department. These guidelines apply across the calendar year, including the summer term.

In cases where students have more than one appointment, the department and/or faculty will agree to a maximum number of hours that the student will work per week with the total number of hours from all positions not to exceed 20 hours/week.

Should it be necessary, a student employee will normally be provided with fifteen (15) calendar days’ written notice of termination, unless circumstances of unsatisfactory performance are of such a nature as to warrant immediate dismissal or unless an earlier termination date was specified at the time of hire. Reasons for termination include, but are not limited to: lack of work, lack of funding, poor attendance, unsatisfactory job performance, mistreatment or abuse of fellow employees, inappropriate conduct as defined in the student code.

Procedures:

Available GAA, GRA, and GTA positions will be posted on the website for at least one week.

Applications for GAA, GRA and GTA positions must include the Student Employment Work Schedule Agreement Form along with the Student Work Application Form. The student will be responsible for having his/her supervisor and all employing faculty/Department sign the agreement and for returning it to the ECPS administrative office. The Department and/or faculty employer maintains the right to terminate employment if a student employee cannot meet their work commitments.

Annually, supervisors and program areas will review student work commitments in light of students’ progress toward degree completion.
